Axway Announces Support for
United Fresh Produce Traceability Initiative
Company to Leverage Pharmaceutical Track and Trace Expertise to Drive Innovation in Global Produce Traceability
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – April 21, 2009 – Axway, the leading global provider of multi-enterprise solutions and infrastructure, today announced it has joined United Fresh, the leading produce trade association, to support its Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI). United Fresh’s PTI is an industry-led effort to enhance traceability throughout the global, fresh produce supply chain. This initiative is designed to maximize the effectiveness of current traceback procedures and develop a standardized industry approach to enhance traceability systems’ efficiency.
In joining the PTI, Axway brings its considerable experience working in the pharmaceutical industry, where it has driven innovation in track and trace technologies that ensure pharmaceutical supply chains are safe, secure and efficient. This technological innovation will contribute to PTI efforts to achieve produce traceability down to the case level by 2012.
The produce industry handles an estimated six billion cases of produce in the United States each year, most of which can be tracked from company to company through the supply chain. Consumer demand for seasonal, perishable produce year round has dramatically increased international importation of produce, which underscores the need for a global approach to produce traceability. To further protect consumers from the impacts of food recalls, the industry has sought a more systematic approach to enhance overall speed and efficiency in supply chain traceability, leading to the creation of the Produce Traceability Initiative.
"We are pleased to announce our full support of United Fresh’s Produce Traceability Initiative to enhance current track and trace procedures and spur future produce traceability standards and technologies," said Paul Fowler, VP of Innovation, Office of the CTO, at Axway. "To mitigate the reach of produce recalls, Axway’s track and trace acumen will help spark whole-chain traceability efforts to track internal and external partner data exchanges throughout the entire food supply chain.”
